Bear Island - day one
Good Morning! A little overcast and then stormy and rainy…but still, what a wonderful day . Sebnem and Lisa carry a suitcase of film gear to the Canoe House, intercepted by Luke and Huxley! They take it the rest of the way. Phew! Miigwich!
8:30 am
First is a circle of introductions, and so, we get to meet: Khloe, Vincent and meet again: Sophia, Casey, Huxley and Luke! Vincent came from across the lake in a kyak! Then we all journaled for 10 minutes (Brain Dump) and then a brisk walk to move the body. We see the street sign WA-WA-TE av (LIGHTENING avenue) and take a nice loop through a cute trail.
9am starts with watching some short films and discussing style, content and inspirations. Then we talk about project ideas. There is an interest in animation, live action, acting, editing, writing and directing!
Under the theme of CHANGE, we heard film ideas about food security, honouring your Elders before it’s too late as well as challenges of living on Bear Island and social media vs cultural practices. There are also ideas around animation and doing personal artist intros.
After lunch we have an intro to animation and then introduction to the cameras and sound. Everyone jumps right in making fun experimental animations and practicing using the cameras and interviewing each other!
Then it is back to writing and planning for their films. We end the day at 4:30 with a check out. We all share a rose, a bud and a thorn. One great thing, one thing to look forward to and one not so great thing.
Our bud is to look forward to tomorrow and more filmmaking!
Great job everyone!
Now the mentors will go jump in the lake! ;)
