Bear Island - travel day
Vancouver to Toronto, Toronto to Sudbury! We took the red eye! Leaving Vancouver on Saturday at 11pm and arriving in Sudbury on Sunday at 11am. 3 hour time difference, 2 plane delays and zero sleep, Bear Island here we come!
Casey (Roots and Wings organizer extraordinaire) picked up us mentors (Sebnem and Lisa g ) at the Sudbury airport! MiIgwich!
And then we immediately filled up on delicious Vietnamese food! Pho Viet Delight! Then we got groceries, drove by the famous water tower (SKODEN has sadly been painted over) and rocked out on the highway headed north toward Temagami. Check out “I'd Love to Change the World” by Ten Years After!
We learned that Temagami Nation has officially changed their name to Teme-Augama Anishnabek, which means Deep Water People. Also Casey’s clan is Porcupine. And guess what? Porcupines can climb trees and they don’t shoot out their quills! Another clan are the Loon Clan and Loons are incredible underwater swimmers! And they can hold their breath for a long time and they can’t really walk on land.
Just a little before the town we make a left onto Mine Road which takes us to the boat launch and thus the 4pm shuttle for Bear Island. Then it’s 2 trips on Casey’s ATV and we are back at Linda’s Wigwam. A quick dip in the lake and then right to bed. Up early tomorrow for the film workshop!
