Bear Island - Day 1 - Temagami
SO excited to head back to Bear Island!
This time mentors Lisa g from Vancouver BC and Nadine Arpin from Sioux Lookout ON met in Thunderbay and drove to Temagami!
This morning, we drove from Temagami Shores and made a right on the Lake Temagami Access Road to park our car and get the boat shuttle. About 5 minutes on the highway and 20 minutes on the dirt road. We were WAY too early for the 8:15am boat to Bear Island…but we weren’t exactly sure how long everything would take! HAHA, But, we could check out the free store and the gorgeous view!
Arnold was our shuttle driver and, we met Kasia on the shuttle who made a film last year and helped with a film in 2018: Lost Music! Hello again Kasia! The shuttle is about 7 minutes and the view is gorgeous!
After bringing our equipment ashore, Casey and Audrey picked us up and drove us to the Canoe House. It is so nice to see Casey again and to meet Audrey IRL.
We had an online ‘production’ meeting on July 3rd so talked with Casey, Audrey and Eddie g to find out the thoughts and ideas. There is a plan to work together to make a documentary about floods that occurred around 1912 - that took land away from Temagami Nation. An important story.
Eddie G arrived and we gathered in a circle to introduce ourselves and share. Andrew joined us a bit later, and we got to learn about him as well. Audrey is interested in editing, and Eddie G expressed interest in working on the larger collaborative documentary project ! Andrew is interested in camera and sound AND is a musician that can provide music!
We began hands-on practice with the cameras, learning about tripods, documentary interviewing and getting comfortable with the equipment. We took a break at 10:15 and had lunch from 12–1. The skies were gray in the morning, but the sun came out during lunch. The Canoe House is such a special place to hold the workshop!
In the afternoon, we regrouped to discuss and practice b-roll filming and interview techniques. We talked about how to make the subject comfortable and creating interview questions. Casey worked on getting some interviews scheduled, while Audrey and Eddie G did some b-roll filming-some of it underwater! Andrew had to leave at noon for his shift at the store but will return through-out the week as his work schedule allows. Audrey and Edward are available all week.
Around 3:30, the workshop concluded with a check out. Then, Casey, Lisa g and Nadine took the shuttle with Casey grabbing some really nice b-roll showing the environment. Also, she wanted to capture some b-roll around the White Bear area and Net Creek. White Bear has been transformed into a rich white people subdivision that is one of the many outcomes from these floods of 1912.
We wrapped the day with a nice dinner at Temagami Shores.
An incredibly rich and productive first day!
