Day 3 Bella Bella!

A beautiful Saturday and a little warmer! Minus 4 rather than minus 10! ;)

We started at 1pm, after a quick trip to the grocery store…Lori and Youth Center team really takes care of our food needs. It is MUCH appreciated!

Reg is already making a little sweet treat request from Lori called Christmas Crack . HAHA ! Reg learned from his cooking teacher: sugar and butter made into a caramel sauce poured over a cookie sheet full of soda crackers then baked and then topped with chocolate. After it cools in the fridge it can be cut up and eaten…it was heaven.

Danny of course went right to work creating his scenes, using their storyboard as reference. The technique is to draw on the white board and capture each frame into Dragon Frame-the animation program. Each character has it’s own colour and Danny has a real cinematic approach with wide, medium and close up scenes, ! It is like a moving comic book!

Yaya arrived and conitnues working on the production plan. Elle came a bit later and after fueling up on tacos joined the production meeting. Their conversation at one point was about impacts of residential schools -through the generations - and the importance of culture to fight colonialism. These two have a lot of knowledge to share from their point of view, it is exciting to see them in their power.

Eryn continued on her edit, getting help from fellow youth centre worker , Shya. Eryn is collecting videos from many sources (Lori, Reg! Marlo! and more!) and then sorting them and titling them. It has so many comedic moments. It makes us laugh every time! ;) Eryn also remembers the editing program from making her film in 2022 so she works easily in it. It is called Davinci, which is a FREE editing program so anyone can download it and use it!

Norman and Tehya work on Tehya’s regalia and they also play traditional Heiltsuk songs. It is such a nice vibe in the centre and there are so many moments when people start dancing! We get to learn whose family song is playing. Norman also shows us some cool equipment that makes vinyl designs that can be ironed onto fabric. Tehya uses a similar iron-on technology to cut out her design in white fabric that will be ironed onto her blanket and apron and then sewn on after. It is very cool to witness the many ways these two artists create!

Sanique explored beats online and re-visited garage band. It is important not to underestimate the creative power of play and experimentation! Sanique can hear the song in her head and is trying to create what she hears. Although she recorded some test video of her singing she wants to rerecord the whole song once she finishes writing it. Sanique also films a scene with her sister, Cheyenne, out on the breakwater - which I swear is minus ten by the time this happens…SOOOO COLD!

TJ sorts through their imagery, selecting usable images, as well as listens to the interviews from yesterday. A title is inserted as well! And then, due to the exhibition games at the hall, TJ needed to leave a bit early. It is a fundraiser for the All Native Basketball Tournament! TJ took a camera and batteries because not only will TJ capture footage at the event but also play TWO games!

Also important to note Claudette made AMAZING cream puffs! Top Chef watch out!

At 6:30 the community hall was FULL with games that ran til past midnight! It had tournament teams playing against pick up teams and there was jello and cupcakes and pizza and chow mien! Latoya was referee and played on the women’s pick up team and Yaya was ref ALL NIGHT! It was so fun to see these exciting and fast paced games AND contribute to the All Native Tournament. TJ, Tehya, Claudette and Reg all kick butt!

What a great day, time to get some shut eye.
